NEW Quantum QLink: Radio Control for Nikon & Canon speedlites

Qlink is the wireless solution to controlling Nikon & Canon speedlites up to 600 feet away from the camera position using radio signals. QLink will not just fire the remote speedlites, but allows control in TTL, Manual and Auto modes as well as the setting of ratios!

This is how it works:

Speedlites: The QLink shoe adaptor fits over the hot-shoe of the flash and a cable connects to the Quantum FreeXwire receiver FW8R.

Amateur Photographer reviews Rotator

Tim Coleman has written the following review of the Rotator for Amateur Photographer magazine.

"Many of us appreciate the versatility of a hotshoe flash on a camera, and the Ray Flash Rotator Bracket boosts this further still. Currently available for Nikon and Canon DSLR models, it offers continuous 360° off-camera rotation for a flashgun.

Existing camera flash brackets rotate the camera rather than the flashgun, so this is unique. It works through a wired connection to the hotshoe mount on the camera and bracket. By releasing the lock, the bracket rotates and positions the flashgun at any angle on the axis of the rotator. Handily, there are three different bracket plates included, which makes the unit compatible with an enthusiast-level model with or without a battery pack, and pro-level DSLRs.

As well as the benefit of having the flashgun at any angle to the camera, the bracket brings the flash away from the camera body and lens, which can make for more flattering and versatile lighting effects, while full flash control is available through the unit. The bracket is made from tough materials, but these make the camera front-heavy when handheld. Also, the bracket does get in the way of the manual focus ring of some lenses. Otherwise, its ease of use is impressive."

About Mark Cleghorn:

The Quantum flash heads will compliment the harsh sun light and images planned by Antonio Sanzari for capturing the local people as they live and the work to survive each day, as well as suppling aid and support the aim of the Hope & Kindness charity is to teach the people to be self sufficient. Their ethos is rather than give a man a fish so he eats well that day, H&K would rather teach the man to fish and he eats well forever.



Through the work and aid provided by H&K in the area of Kosele in West Kenyan, there has been many positively impacting projects that reach far beyond the walls of the orphanage and school. Antonio Sanzari will be looking to record and document some of these moments and people whose lives have positively changed and subsequently they have been able to positively influence other people in their community with jobs, aid and mainly hope.

We look forward to his return with some very strong heart felt portraits that show the positive and dignified life of these people who are finding happiness and reasons for hope in one of the poorest areas of the world where war, aids, tribal conflict and nature has continually struck at the core of their community.

Unlike some charities, Hope and Kindness’s running costs are less than 1 pence in the £ so the money goes straight into Kosele and the children and their projects.

NEW Quantum Battery Cable for CANON 5D MKII and 7D

Quantum Instruments have released a new cable to power the Canon 5D MKII and 7D from Quantum’s TURBO 2x2 or TURBO3 battery: the SD7.

The SD7 cable is 220cm long, with a Canon battery dummy on one end and a multi-pin DIN plug on the other to connect the Canon 5D MKII & 7D to the Quantum TURBO 2x2 and TURBO 3.

Quantum batteries are normally associated with ultra-fast flash recycling, but there are many cameras that can also be powered by their range of power-packs! A heavy duty battery supply is especially important for video capable DSLR’s like the Canon 5D MKII and 7D and the Nikon D3, D90 & D300S and in the case of the TURBO 3 up to FIVE HOURS of continuous video recording is available!

The SD7 will also be of interest to any photographer who needs to shoot stills continuously for long time periods, i.e. events, surveillance, time-laps or wildlife photography. Heather Angel's Wild Kew - A major exhibition at Kew Gardens

29 May – 5 September 2010

Wild Kew is a celebration of the wildlife attracted by an array of plants and habitats at the World Heritage Site – Kew Gardens, in this International Year of Biodiversity. Based on Heather Angel’s book Wild Kew, this exhibition reveals a hidden wealth of wildlife through the seasons on view in the Nash Conservatory designed by John Nash in 1825 for Buckingham Palace and moved to Kew in 1836.

There are enchanting wildfowl babies, amorous parakeets, hyperactive squirrels and an approachable fox. Along the waterside margins opportunistic herons stalk fish or pounce on a stray waterfowl baby. Summer flowers attract a host of insect pollinators and dragonflies hawk back and forth beside water, where a Chinese mitten crab may be glimpsed. Autumn fruits provide a feast for jays, jackdaws, parakeets and squirrels and winter brings an array of winter flowers and wildfowl with the chance of courting swans.

The Kew entrance fee provides free entry to this exhibition of stunning images in the Nash Conservatory as part of the Summer at Kew Festival.

While shooting a new instructional video, photographer Mark Cleghorn had to watch how his stand mounted Quantum Qflash fell on to concrete.

New Quantum QFlash Reflector for UV-IR Photography

Quantum have introduced a new reflector for UV and IR photography aimed at photographers in the areas of:

  • Crime Scene
  • Forensics
  • Medical
  • Industrial
  • Fine Art

The NEW QF80 reflector can be used on all Quantum Qflash T models and is used in conjunction with UV & IR 67mm threaded filters from manufacturers such as B&W & Hoya. Filters are available to produce narrow or broad band wavelengths of flash illumination from Ultraviolet to visible Infrared. These can vary in range from non-visible Ultraviolet (350-400nm) to visible light to non-visible Infrared 700nm and above.


A Qflash fitted with the QF80 reflector and suitable filter provides a powerful and portable light source of UV, IR and visible light for IR-UV sensitive cameras, such as the Fuji IS Pro, and conventional cameras that record visible light.

By using various filters on the QF80 reflector and on the camera lens, photographers can record pure UV effects, UV fluorescence, blue or green visible fluorescence and IR imaging.

Using the QF80 reflector with a suitable filter on the Qflash is easy because it will all four modes of the Qflash operate as normal: Manual, Auto, Stroboscopic & TTL.

These are the only wear-compensating camera brackets on the market today, made to the highest standards in precision engineering. ringflash adaptor NEWS

Delivery of Nikon version: The ringflash adaptor to fit the Nikon SB800 (Code: SIRN) has been delayed and deliveries for this product are expected to commence in Mid-June 2007. We apologise sincerely for the unforeseen delay!

Compatibility with other flash units: There have been many requests from owners of flash units other than the Nikon SB800 and Canon 580EX to make use of this unique product. At the moment there is no time schedule for further models of the ringflash adapter. However, feedback from happy users of the ringflash adapter shows that the current model can be used with a variety of other flash units!

ringflash adaptor for Canon 580EX (code: SIRC) will fit perfectly to:
  • Canon 580EX
  • Metz 58 Series
  • Minolta 5600 HS
  • Konica/Minolta 5600 HS (D)
  • Sony FLV-56AM

The recently released Canon 580EX MKII will not fit!!! Unfortunately the front of the 580EX MKII is approx 2 mm larger. A new version of the ringflash adaptor will be available soon.

The ringflash adaptor has been adapted by photographers to work with Canon 430, Canon 550, Metz 54 Series & Vivitar 283/285. Some of these flash units are just a tiny bit larger than the Canon 580 and this means opening up the plastic holder that slips over the front of the flash unit. In cases where the flash unit is smaller a bit of padding has been used. In most cases a bit of inventiveness is required to find a way of holding the units securely together, for example a Velcro strap or strong rubber band. See note*

ringflash adapter for Nikon SB800 (code: SIRN) is a perfect match to the SB800. So far we have no further information on potential use with other flash units. We do know that the NikonSB600 is slightly smaller than the SB800 and therefore will not hold the ringflash adapter safely in position.
