Key Light: Canon Speedlight 580ex fitted with a Flaghead Photographic "Ring light" adapter @ approx. f5.6
Effects light: A studio strobe fitted with a snoot was used to "Slash" a pool of light across the metal backdrop @ approx. f8
This image proves the "Keep it simple" school of thought and that lighting doesn't need be intricately complicated to be stunning or effective.
This two light set up is as simple as it gets! The key light was a Flaghead Photographic "Ring light" adapter fitted on camera. The 580ex (supplying the power) was set to manual and its output measured in the usual way with a hand help flash meter. The "Ring flash" is responsible for the very flat lighting with the characteristic "Rim" of shadow around the subject.
The effects light, like the key, is very simple. A straight forward studio monoblock fitted with a snoot angled to "Slash" across the background offering a little depth and separation.
The image was captured on a Canon 5D fitted with a 24-105 IS "L" series lens set towards the wide end. The shot was taken from a kneeling position to suggest the models dominance and add a degree of dynamism to the shot, further exaggerated by tilting the camera.
The colour temperature was set on the camera to the tungsten setting, using day light balanced flash units renders the image with its exaggerated "Cool" tone to compliment both the hard edgy look and the metallic back drop.
